But, through dumb luck, in the future humans do beat the aliens. As promised the "Xeelee, an Omnibus" takes place on a cosmic scale. Nearing the end of their work on the Ring, roughly 4 million years from the present, the Xeelee constructed several hundreds of enclosures to return to the beginning of their history 20 billion years ago. As a Baxter fan, I put off reading this series for far too long.
The proto-Xeelee established symbiotic relationships with other survivors as well as autocatalystic reactions in the new baryonic matter, thus emerging what would later be called the Xeelee. Stephen Baxter gets creative in all four stories. These ships are way more advanced than anything the humans have, but because humans have plot immunity, they manage to easily destroy both of them.
To see what your friends thought of this book. The Xeelee frequently are found to have left behind derelict ships, tools, and other materials giving the appearance of thoughtlessness or reckless abandon at what a junior species might do with it. Should have been Timelike Infinity, Ring, Flux, Raft, that is the order I should have read them in, would have made for more continuity. And again, it's probably just me. But, I'm glad I gave him another chance because the Xeelee books are great. Humans proved only a slight annoyance or distraction to the Xeelee. and started to worry about the collaboration. In the Xeelee sequence life and intelligence are ubiquitous throughout the universe. He is currently working on his next novel, a collaboration with Sir Arthur C. Clarke. It was first briefly described in the conclusion of Timelike Infinity when it was encountered by Michael Poole after having been pushed several million years into the future. At the close of each of these epochs, as the universe took on a fundamentally different characteristic, there was a corresponding mass extinction, but small enclaves of the intelligences would survive in one manner or another, witnessing the universe becoming progressively colder and slower-reacting. Apparently in the end, nobody bothers to change the timeline, everything happens as it always had, meaning billions of people were killed. Within the Xeelee Sequence, they are considered to be the most advanced of all Baryonic life-forms and posses technology and abilities far beyond other spacefaring civilization.
So many things to digest and muse on whilst going about my day. Will explore the author again for the interesting universe and cool ideas. The wiki for Stephen Baxter's Xeelee sequence. Seemingly as a unified species, the Xeelee have concerned themselves with defeating the Photino Birds for almost the entire history of the universe. As far as is known and aside from the Photino Birds, the Xeelee were seldom warlike and usually treated the junior species with disinterest or abandon. For some unexplained reason, they don't even bother to close the gate, so obviously the future aliens send through a few ships. Return to the eon-spanning and universe-crossing c…, Michael Poole finds himself in a very strange land…. Starbreakers are beams of coherent gravitational waves that the Xeelee use as both weapons and tools. The universe has a fundamental tendency toward complexity and autocatalystic systems are easily created. Stephen Baxter is a trained engineer with degrees from Cambridge (mathematics) and Southampton Universities (doctorate in aeroengineering research). I stopped reading this as I didn't like the style. There is no happy ending, they just postponed death for a few generations. I liked Ring and Timelike Infinity. The only female character in the story is of course described via her looks while the males are described more via their character. This style of writing was probably great back in the day but pretty out of touch now.
So I'm still giving it a solid 5 stars. When I heard that he was collaborating with Stephen Baxter, of whom I had never heard in spite of his prolific output, I had to read something by him.
this is a story about evolution of humanity in the future. In general, the photino birds are probably unaware of almost all other forms of life due to the fact that dark matter interacts extremely weakly with baryonic matter (normal matter that is composed of atoms). I thought there was a lot of inventiveness especially in Raft and I also enjoyed Ring for its hubris. About a year ago I read all the synopsis of books featured on the various "Greatest Space Opera's of all time" lists. Haven't I seen you on Halo Nation? There is no explicit physical description of the Xeelee throughout the series. In the novel Exultant it is alluded that over their exceedingly long history, the Xeelee have combined themselves with their technology and, as such, may not have a distinct individual presence that Humans would be familiar with, but in Vacuum Diagrams, it is implied that they have small fingers, as the buttons and controls of their technology are small. Mr. Baxter lives in Prestwood, England. That means they are stuck with a small population, dependent on. Other than that, stories, characters and dialogues are so-so. This is both good and bad - it makes the novels interesting and unus. In the Xeelee sequence life and intelligence are ubiquitous throughout the universe. The Photino Birds are a species of dark matter with that prefer a habitat in the gravity well of stars. The material is incredibly sharp, hard, and transparent; due to its unique spacetime construction, it has strange gravitational effects. In the short story Blue Shift the source of the Starbreaker is described as a pistol-like device designed for a hands the size of a human child. Since it is a collection of four books (Raft, Timelike Infinity, Flux and Ring) it's hard to put one single rating on it. I get where he was going. Imagine a race …
It’s what he asks.”, “Something had changed. Let us know what’s wrong with this preview of, Xeelee: An Omnibus: Raft, Timelike Infinity, Flux, Ring. Though there were several orders of magnitude fewer Xeelee than humans known to be in the Galaxy, their high degree of technological advancement made them a formidable enemy. They crafted their starships, known as Nightfighters, out of a strange form of matter that seems to violate Pauli's Exclusion Principle (which states that no two electrons of the same atom can be in the same state at the same time).
Baxter is the winner of the British Science Fiction Award and the Locus Award, as well as being a nominee for an Arthur C. Clarke Award, most recently for Manifold: Time. Over the billions of years since their migration, the Xeelee have become ubiquitous part of the complex ecology of the super massive black holes along with an unnamed number of other species that are also veterans of the same very early eras of the universe. Because of its intense gravitation and spinning, it creates a tear in the universe at its center. Eventually Humanity again began to expand into the galaxy, wiping out any other species encountered during their advance. This omnibus too a long time to read, and parts of it were quite slow, but it was worth it in the end. The doctrinal stagnation collapsed and Humanity advanced technologically over the next 100,000 years. They were first remotely mentioned in the 1994 novel Timelike Infinity and were later central actors of several novels and a substantial number of short stories. It further implied that the Anti-Xeelee, in at least some regards, is travelling backwards in time like some anti-particles are thought to do.
They have …
The universe has a fundamental tendency toward complexity and autocatalystic systems are easily created.
They were all excellent stories, with one notable exception for me at least. The Xeelee's greatest achievement—possibly the greatest structure of Baryonic matter ever constructed—is the Ring, a gigantic loop of cosmic string, millions of light-years across and spinning at close to light speed. Characters do not seem to be too well developed in any of the novels anyway, science is clearly the queen of every story. I read the whole omnibsu dutifully and, at the end, thought "And then what?"
Building the Ring had the appearance of being destructive on a galactic scale because its larger purpose was not understood until the very far future, and many smaller Xeelee projects, such as changing the orbit of Callisto to preserve the bacteria there, lacked an obvious explanation. Refresh and try again. Start by marking “Xeelee (Xeelee Sequence, #1-4)” as Want to Read: Error rating book. Human casualties were estimated to exceed more than 10 billion per year and more than 30 trillion over the course of the assault.
Stephen Baxter is a trained engineer with degrees from Cambridge (mathematics) and Southampton Universities (doctorate in aeroengineering research). And again, it's probably just me. Although the galactic black holes were trillions of times more massive than their ancestral homes, the Xeelee proved to be quite adept at using the complex physics around the event horizon for their own purposes. Definitely a must-read for most scifi fans.
The novel Exultant describes the progenitor of the Xeelee, referred to as the proto-Xeelee, as one of the few survivors of the last phase change (when the universe had cooled enough for atoms to form). I don't think anything can live inside a neutron star, though.. which is the whole premise for Flux. More than a simple Closed Timelike Curve, the Sugar Lumps are described as having a negative vector in time (i.e. Very odd. Or the Pak. The Xeelee, however, demonstrated several instances of compassion and even charity toward other species, particularly when it involved escaping the Photino Bird's destruction of the universe.
Heard good things about it and Betty ~Altic got it for my birthday! Overall it is an interesting world, but as others have mentioned the characters are fairly flat. Superb.
Their abilities in the series far exceed that of a Type III Civilization on the Kardashev scale. [the day (and humanity) is saved by... the same annoying twit from Timelike Infinity. They were first remotely mentioned in the 1994 novel Timelike Infinity and were later central actors of several novels and a substantial number of short stories. I was right. His novel Voyage won the Sidewise Award for Best Alternate History Novel of the. As the primordial black holes evaporated over time the Xeelee eventually migrated to using the supermassive black holes around which Galaxies were forming. These people have exactly one useful way of getting food, their food dispensers. I just wasn't fascinated by the trip. My only experience before this with Baxter was Titan, which I did not like at all.
